Join Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection. Forbidden Games is much like childhood itself simple, pure, and somehow monstrous. Not unlike the recent films of Lars Von Trier, it's the character's inner world that creates the downfall of their outer lives and the mixture can be bitter sweet. The emotional power of Forbidden Games can also be a minor weak spot, as it's not an experience you're likely to be in the mood for often. This can be forgiven if you perceive the film as being filtered through the eyes of Paulette, the delicate child of privilege thrust into the reality of farm living. Cl¿ment's main folly is his rudimentary portrayal of the farmers, a buffoonish group unable to see past their own front yards.

While it is obviously a deep look at the effects of war on children, the film also tackles the issue of religion and its traditions as a way of coping with the unknown of death. As the children's play world interrupts the far more melodramatic lives of the adults, both begin to dissolve in the grief of living in loss. Every on screen action of every character contributes to narrative, then again with a running time of only 85 minutes there's hardly room for any dead weight. Both beautiful and ghastly, Forbidden Games takes a child's book view of darkly serious matters.Ĭl¿ment's great achievement in the film is creating a seamless chain of events on screen. Their morbid game becomes more involved and the effects go far beyond the bubble of childhood fantasy. Seeking a way to comprehend and cope with her parents' deaths, Paulette decides to make her own graveyard in the mill with dead animals she and Michel find around the farm.

She and Michel bury her puppy in the farm's mill, and he teaches her about burial rights and the Christian iconography of death. Through the family, Paulette learns about death and religion for the first time, and her infantile mind is unable to fully comprehend either. Michel's simple minded family seem obliged to stick to their own, yet they allow Paulette into their family as much as they are able. She wanders on alone carrying a lifeless puppy through the countryside, eventually running into Michel, a country boy who takes her in with his family.

Forbidden Games follows Paulette, a five year old Parisian refugee whose parents are gunned down while fleeing to the country.
